Citizenship
Once you have achieved permanent residency in Australia, you have two options:
- Remain a permanent resident
- You get to keep your citizenship of your home country, and have the ability to come and go freely in Australia for approximately 5 years upon permanent visa grant.
- If you want to travel outside of Australia after 5 years, you need to apply for a permanent resident travel visa.
- If you leave Australia for an extended period, you may lose your permanent resident rights.
- Apply for Australian Citizenship
- Although there are eligibility criteria for applying for citizenship, once you have Australian Citizenship, you can travel anywhere without losing the right to live and work in Australia.
- Some countries do not allow for dual citizenship (e.g. India), and so you may need weigh this up in your decision.
